Swiss City Lugano Accepts Bitcoin and Tether for Municipal Taxes

Lugano, a Swiss city, has joined the ranks of three other Swiss cities and cantons in adopting cryptocurrency as a payment method. Lugano now accepts Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether (USDT) for taxes and other city fees.

This initiative is part of Lugano’s “Plan B” partnership with Tether, aimed at revitalizing its financial system through Bitcoin technology.

Previously, Lugano limited crypto payments to its official online portal, but now, this capability extends to all invoices. Residents and businesses can pay using a mobile wallet by scanning a QR code on their invoices, with Bitcoin and Tether being the primary accepted cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin Suisse plays a key role in this initiative, handling the technical aspects of the crypto payment solution, ensuring convenient BTC and USDT transactions.

Armin Schmid, Chief Product Officer at Bitcoin Suisse, expressed enthusiasm for supporting Lugano’s blockchain adoption:

It is great to see that more and more Swiss municipalities are offering payments in cryptocurrencies as an option available to both citizens and companies, complementing traditional payment methods such as post-office counters and e-banking platforms.

Bitcoin Suisse is proud to provide the infrastructure for crypto payments and has extended similar services to other Swiss cities and municipalities.

Switzerland has been proactive in integrating crypto, with cities like Zug and Zermatt already implementing crypto payments for taxes since 2021. Additionally, St. Galler Kantonalbank recently launched Bitcoin and Ethereum trading and custody services, further cementing Switzerland’s position as a leader in crypto adoption.
